A Response to the Video:
Seventh-day Adventism — The Spirit Behind the Church
by Bob Pickle
This book is a response to a video put together by five former Adventist
preachers, a video attacking the Seventh-day Adventist Church and Ellen White. The 200+ replies
in A Response to the Video are thorough, biblical, and
well-documented. It's all yours for only $9.95,
plus shipping (calculated on the Check Out page). 8.5" x 11"; 160 pp.
Got friends who are asking questions? Have they seen web sites, books, or this video?
Are they troubled by the allegations made by former Adventist preachers like
Mark Martin, Dale Ratzlaff, and Sydney Cleveland, and by the book The White Lie? You know
that there are answers to their questions, but you're not sure where. A
Response to the Video is for you!
Not an Adventist, but you're doing a little research
on Adventism and its doctrines, trying to find out if it's a cult or not?
But how will you make an informed decision if you've never heard the
other side of the case?
What other side, you ask? Take for example all the criticisms on this
video. Presumably they're some of the best in existence today. Yet in
reality, not one single criticism meets the three-fold test of being
true and relevant and biblical.
Let the truth be known: Some of the very arguments used against
Adventism have been used by skeptics against Scripture for centuries. To
choose to not be an Adventist is one thing. To try to refute Adventism
with arguments that undermine the authority of Scripture is quite
another.
A Response to the Video contains 239 replies organized
into the following sections:
- Initial Points
- The Millerite Movement
- The Role of Mrs. White and Her Writings

A Response to the Video gets right to the point on a
host of topics dealing with Adventist history and teachings. Yes, the biblical Day of Atonement
was likely in October in 1844 after all (pp. 17-19). Actually, many
critics of William Miller today have more in common with his views on
the second coming than with the views of his opponents (p. 16). No, Mrs.
White didn't plagiarize (and neither did Matthew, Mark, and Luke), and
there never was any lawsuit (pp. 75-77). Strangely enough, some of the
quotes attributed to her in the video either were from books she didn't write, were
altered, or don't exist (p. 13). Sometimes all you have to do is fill in a few
ellipses here and read a little context there to discover that the truth
is the opposite of the allegation (e.g. pp. 35, 36, 95, 96).
If the critics won't give you a balanced picture, then yes, you have to get the other side before
deciding whether the Seventh-day Adventist church is a cult or not. And A
Response to the Video is the easiest way for you to do it. You'll also get some tools to use if
you need to do further research: 1) basic questions to ask the one
making allegations, and 2) resources available for finding additional
answers.
From the back cover, hear what one prominent Baptist
preacher had to say about Seventh-day Adventists in 1987:
In a special sense the founders of your movement were people
to whom God spoke. He wanted to create a special witness so that the
rest of His church could look at the faithfulness of your movement. He
wanted the rest of the church to say, "We could learn from them. We
will be better people. We will be more obedient to our heavenly
Father, and our Saviour, because we have watched the walk of the
Adventists. We have watched the price they have paid. We have watched
as they have been ostracized, as they have been misunderstood, as they
have been slandered. But there will come a time when it’s clear why
they have had to go through these rather narrow channels and difficult
pathways."
And God will say, "Look. See these people? The rest of you
take note."
Who said that? You'll have to get the book to find out. Was he right?
